I owe this one to my sister-in-law! While putting along on a beautiful hiking trail we decided to take our shoes off and wade around in a small creek. My sister-in-law waded over to a little sandy corner under an alder tree where we stood in awe at the little tiny nest. I had never seen one before and would have missed it if she hadn’t discovered it herself.
The Rufous hummingbird makes one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird in the world, measured by body size. The average size of a rufous hummingbird nest is about 2 inches in diameter. They are loosely woven from plant fibers and spiderwebs so they can stretch with the babies as they grow.
